Game Dev Seniority Calculator

Studios do not level people on years served. They level people on what can be handed to them and left alone. That is why someone who owns a system end to end after four years outranks someone who has been completing assigned tasks for eight. This calculator weights scope far more heavily than time.

Scope-weighted

Studios level people on scope, not years served. Answer honestly about what you own.

What each band actually means

Graduate and Junior

Work is assigned and reviewed. You are trusted with well-defined tasks inside someone else’s design. The measure of progress is how often your work comes back needing changes.

Mid

You own a feature end to end. Someone still decides what gets built, but not how. You are expected to spot problems in your own work before review, and to estimate your own time with reasonable accuracy.

Senior

You own a system that other people build on top of, and your decisions constrain their work. This is the first band where the job stops being purely about output and starts being about judgement — including saying no to things.

Lead and Principal

These diverge. A Lead takes on people: hiring, one-to-ones, unblocking, and the emotional load of a team. A Principal goes deeper technically and stays an individual contributor. They are frequently paid similarly and they are not the same job. Choosing the wrong one is a common and miserable mistake.

Director

You own a discipline or a department, its budget and its headcount, and you are measured on outcomes over quarters rather than sprints.

Why your title may not match your level

Titles in games are not standardised. A "Senior" at a twelve-person indie and a "Senior" at a 400-person AAA studio are often doing different jobs at different bands, and the indie title usually carries more scope with less pay.

This matters most when moving between studio tiers. Going from Senior at an indie to Mid at a AAA is common, is not a demotion in practice, and is frequently a pay rise. Going the other way, a AAA Senior taking a Lead title at an indie, often means taking on management with no increase at all.

The signals that actually move you up a band

  • You are asked first when something ambiguous or risky comes up.
  • Your estimates are trusted without padding by someone else.
  • People check with you before building against your work.
  • You change the brief rather than only executing it.
  • You shape other people’s work through review, standards or tooling.

If none of those are true yet, more years will not produce the promotion on their own.

Frequently asked questions

How many years until I am senior in games?

Commonly five to eight, but the range is wide and years are the weakest predictor. People who ship frequently and take ownership early get there faster; people at studios with no room above them can stall indefinitely regardless of skill.

Do shipped titles matter more than years?

Yes, and by a distance. A shipped title proves you survived production, scope cuts and certification — things no amount of unreleased work demonstrates. Two shipped titles moves you further than two extra years.

Should I take a Lead role?

Only if you want the people part. Leading is a career change, not a promotion, and the skills barely overlap with the ones that got you there. If you want depth rather than headcount, ask about a Principal track instead.

I was levelled down moving studios. Is that normal?

Very, especially moving from a small studio to a large one. Judge the move on the band and the pay, not the word on the contract.
