Game Developer Salary Calculator

Most "game developer salary" pages are built from scraped job adverts. This one is built from published industry surveys — the GDC Salary Report 2025 (562 respondents) and the Skillsearch Games & Interactive Salary Survey 2024/25 — and it shows you every figure it uses rather than hiding them behind the widget.

Figures: Skillsearch Games & Interactive Salary Survey 2024/25 (regional bands), GDC Salary Report 2025 (US discipline weighting, 562 respondents), ZipRecruiter Aug 2026 (QA percentiles). Estimates, not offers — verify against live listings on the job board.

What game developers actually earn

The US industry average is $142,000, with a median of $129,000. The gap between those two numbers matters: the average is pulled up by a long tail of senior and management salaries, so the median is closer to what a typical person earns.

Discipline is the first big lever:

Average US salary by discipline, GDC Salary Report 2025 (562 respondents, surveyed July 2025). Industry average $142,000; median $129,000.
DisciplineAverage salaryvs industry average
Production & Management$160,000+12.7%
Programming$150,000+5.6%
Business & Marketing$134,000-5.6%
Game Design$133,000-6.3%
Audio$132,000-7.0%
Art & Animation$124,000-12.7%
QA & Testingmeasured separately
Data & Analyticsno benchmark exists
QA & Testing (ZipRecruiter, Aug 2026)$31,769-77.6%

Why QA sits so far below everything else

QA is not a slightly cheaper version of the other disciplines — it is a different pay scale entirely. The US average for a video game QA tester is $31,769, roughly $15.27 an hour. That is about 78% below the industry average, and it is why this calculator refuses to apply a simple multiplier to QA roles and uses the published percentile spread instead.

It is also why QA is the most common entry route into games and the hardest discipline to build a long career in without moving sideways into production, design or automation.

Salary by seniority and region

Region changes the number more than seniority does. A mid-level developer in North America earns more than a Lead in Eastern Europe, in raw currency terms. Here is the published matrix, each region in its own currency:

Two things worth knowing about this table

In the Eastern Europe and MENA columns, the Lead figure exceeds Principal. That is almost certainly small-sample noise in the source survey rather than a real feature of those markets. We have left it as published rather than quietly smoothing it, because you should be able to see the data you are being sold.

The two surveys also disagree on discipline ranking. GDC puts Programming at the top in the US; Skillsearch puts Design above Programming globally. Different role mixes and different geographies. This calculator applies the regional band first and the discipline weighting second, and never blends the two datasets into one invented average.

What actually moves your number

Studio size

At AAA studios, 85% of staff earn over $100,000. At AA studios it is 75%. At indies it is 50%. Moving between studio tiers changes your pay more reliably than another year of experience at the same tier.

Where you are employed, not where you work

Remote roles are priced to the country you are legally employed in, not the country your employer is in. That is why the remote pay equivalence calculator exists as a separate tool.

Specialisation inside a discipline

Engine and graphics specialists sit well above the general programming average. In art, technical artists and VFX artists command far more than modellers — the more technical and the harder to replace, the higher the band.

How this differs from ZipRecruiter and Glassdoor

Generalist salary sites derive figures from job adverts and self-reported data across all industries, then filter for a job title. That produces wide ranges with no seniority cross-tab and no games-specific context.

Survey data has the opposite trade-off: smaller samples, but people answering about their actual pay, and cross-tabbed by level and region. For a question like "what should a senior technical artist in Poland earn", survey data is the only thing that answers it.

Frequently asked questions

Is $142,000 really the average game developer salary?

In the United States, at the time of the GDC 2025 survey, yes — but that figure covers all disciplines and all seniorities, and it is an average rather than a median. Globally the picture is very different: one survey of over 1,000 game workers found 39.6% earn under $40,000. A single worldwide average is close to meaningless.

Do remote game jobs pay less?

Usually a little, and it depends on the employer’s pay policy rather than on remote work itself. Studios that price to a global band pay less than those that price to a San Francisco band. Against that, remote roles open up far more of the market to you.

Why does this calculator refuse to estimate data and analytics roles?

Because no game-industry-specific salary benchmark for data roles exists at any credible tier. GDC folds them into business and management. We could borrow a generic tech-analyst figure and present it as a games number, but it would be made up.

How often is this updated?

Whenever the underlying surveys publish a new edition. Every figure on this page names its source and its date, so you can judge how stale it is yourself.

See what is actually on offer

Benchmarks tell you what a role should pay. Listings tell you what it does pay. Every role on the job board is remote and verified against the studio’s own posting, and the ones publishing a salary range show it up front. You can also check an offer against these bands before you answer it.
